Big Weekend of Racing at Roseville’s All American Speedway

Here is a preview of the 2011 Toyota Napa Auto Parts 150 weekend prepared by Steve Blakesley of Blakesley Sports Media.

We called last year’s TOYOTA / NAPA Auto Parts 150 the most competitive field in event history, but the 12th appearance of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West at All American Speedway has attracted a record 30 entries including 10 teenagers and three drivers making their series debuts. The championship has been decided with Greg Pursley clinching the title while his teammate Dylan Kwasniewski has put the wraps on rookie of the year as well. With both 2011 crowns decided, Saturday’s race will almost serve more as a preview to the 2012 campaign.

The SRL SPEARS Southwest Tour and Legends of the Pacific will also be in action on Saturday night while Late Models and Modifieds will race on Friday.

8:40 p.m. – Steven Blakesley and Tim Quievrn on the call of the NASCAR “TOYOTA / NAPA Auto Parts 150” at www.NASCARHomeTracks.com

The contenders:

Jacob Gomes – The 2010 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series rookie of the year is driving a potent car for John Gomez making him an easy favorite to challenge the series regulars.

Jason Fensler – Although he drives for the low budget Team Cass Racing, it didn’t keep him from winning the race at Roseville in April which saw one of the best finishes in series history.

Eric Holmes – The three-time series champion has been red hot after a slow start, teaming up with championship crew chief Ty Joiner halfway through the season moving up to third in points.

Dylan Kwasniewski – This will be the 16 year-old rookie’s second start at Roseville and after a lot of success in the spring he definitely has a shot at the win.

Greg Pursley – Although he has never run all that well at All American Speedway, it’s hard to bet against the 2011 series champion for a good run.

Moses Smith – He has never won a race in the series but Bill McAnally Racing has always been strong at this track. Smith had a career best second place finish at Roseville in the spring.

Derek Thorn – Saturday’s race will mark his fifth career start in the series but he is already a veteran at running up front including a pole position at the All-Star Showdown.

Jason Fensler from Elk Grove won the race in April driving the Team Cass Racing No. 59 Chevrolet.

Outside chance:

Jessica Brunelli – 2009 All American Speedway Modified rookie of the year has never won a Late Model or Modified feature but will be racing for Mike Naake who had a top-five in the spring with Eric Schmidt at the wheel.

Cameron Hayley – 15 year-old rookie driver has finished second in both series starts for Bill McAnally Racing with crew chief Rob Dixon, but has only made one start at Roseville and that was in a Late Model.

Dylan Lupton – Young rookie driver finished fourth in TOYOTA Speedway Late Model points in 2011 and is making his second series start but first start with Bill McAnally Racing.

Luis Martinez – Driving as a teammate to Derek Thorn and nearly winning the spring race should make Martinez a favorite but he is departing the series after this year and it is yet to be seen if pairing with Thorn is a success.

Michael Self – The RCR development driver has shown flashes of brilliance throughout 2011 in the series but will need a strong performance against the tough field.

Matt Scott – 2010 & 2011 track champion has 17 wins in a Late Model at All American Speedway but Saturday will be his first career start in the series.

Brett Thompson – Although he hasn’t had overwhelming success this year, it is impossible to count out the well-funded and well-prepared program that Thompson has.

Other cars to watch: Chad Boat, Daryl Harr, Braeden Havens, Dylan Hutchison, Jim Inglebright, Andrew Murray, Ryan Philpott.

Matt Scott Wins His Second Late Model Title, Moves up to NASCAR West Series

By Steven Blakesley from Blakesley Sports Media

PINE GROVE, CALIFORNIA (September 20, 2011) – On Saturday night, 19 year-old Matt Scott won his sixth Late Model main event of 2011 at All American Speedway to take the NASCAR Late Model championship. With the championship, Matt Scott Racing will now move into the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West beginning at All American Speedway on Saturday October 15.

“The level of competition is a lot higher in the West so I’m really just looking for a good top-five finish or top-ten finish to get my feet wet,” Scott said.

The 2011 NASCAR Late Model championship is the second straight for the 19-time main event winner.

Scott not only won the race on Saturday but he also took quick time in time trials with a 13.80 second lap around the one-third mile asphalt oval. An invert of seven placed Scott seventh on the grid for the 50 lap main event with Scott jumping up to third by lap 12.

After taking second from NASCAR West regular Travis Milburn, Scott began to reel in rookie Dylan Hutchison for the lead. On lap 44, Scott moved past Hutchison to drive to a comfortable victory before a large crowd of supporters on championship night.

“I was biding my time to get through pack so I’d have a car left for the leaders,” Scott said. “I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to reel in Hutchison because he was so far ahead so it was nice to get the win!”

Scott finished within the top-four in all 14 races for the NASCAR Late Models this year at All American Speedway and starting his NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West career at the speedway should give him a good opportunity for success.

“It would mean a lot to win the race as I’ve watched the series race at Roseville over the years and with it being our home track,” Scott said. “There’s definitely a bunch of nerves going into it as I want to do well.”

Matt Scott Racing took delivery of a NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West car last week and will carry co-primary sponsorship from Kamps Propane and RPM NorCal in its debut on October 15. Additional sponsorships are needed to fill out the car for October 15 and for the 2012 season where Matt Scott Racing intends to run the entire season.

“This is a good chance to partner up with a corporate sponsor or maybe even an up-and-comer who would like to grow with us as we go up the NASCAR ladder,” Scott said.

Race fans can help support Matt Scott Racing by making a $5 donation towards tickets for the October 14 Late Model race at All American Speedway. The $5 donation can be made at www.mattscottracing.com. Matt Scott is also in contention for the national Most Popular Driver poll on Speed51.com where fans can vote once daily.

Scott Pierovich from Alamo wins the Larry Burton Classic in Roseville

Roseville’s All American Speedway was the scene Saturday night of some of the best sprint car racing in California. The USAC Western Sprint Cars and the USAC Western Pavement Ford Focus Series including the Young Guns all competed. Here is a release from Blakesley Sports Media describing the action.

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (May 15, 2011) – Alamo’s Scott Pierovich stormed to an impressive victory in Saturday night’s Larry Burton Classic at All American Speedway, leading the final 36 laps to win by 2.1 seconds over a field of 18 USAC Western Sprint Cars.

Pierovich’s win marked his third straight victory this season but his first in the USAC Sprint Cars in 2011. With the win, Pierovich extended his points lead in the overall USAC Western Classic Racing Series while he ranks second in the USAC Western Sprint Car Series on pavement.

Saturday’s action on the .333 mile asphalt oval opened up with Lincoln’s Tony Hunt taking the Echo Power Equipment fast-time with a 12.694 second lap. Hunt was awarded a gas powered leaf blower courtesy of Echo and Citrus Heights Saw & Mower. Pierovich, rookie Cody Gerhardt, Santa Rosa’s Brian McClish, and Audra Sasselli rounded out the top-five.

Luis Ramos III led the field to green while Pierovich began to move forward from fifth. By lap six, Pierovich had taken over second place from Sasselli.

The yellow came out on lap six when Shauna Hogg stalled in turn three after contact from San Francisco’s Tim Barber. Barber’s car suffered front end damage in the incident with his front bumper bar sticking straight out.

On the restart, officials attempted to black flag Barber while Pierovich went after Ramos. Pierovich made a diving pass inside Ramos in turn one to take the lead on lap 14.

The caution came out again on lap 17 when popular dirt sprint car driver Andy Forsberg tangled with the lapped car of Dave Dias. Forsberg was done for the night to the disappointment of his fans after driving from 18th to 12th in a dirt chassis that had been quickly adjusted for pavement earlier that day.

Sasselli back pedaled on the restart, eventually falling back to sixth place as she was freight trained by the leaders. That moved Ramos into second before Hunt passed him on lap 27.

Sasselli engaged in a thrilling back and forth duel with Sebastopol’s Geoff Ensign, as they did in Madera, finally taking fifth on lap 44.

Despite his large lead, Pierovich continued to run laps at pole speeds to stretch his lead to over two seconds. Pierovich ripped underneath the double-checkered flags with Hunt coming home a distant second.

Ramos fought off a challenge from Gerhardt to take third with Sasselli defending fifth over Ensign.

Heat race wins on the evening went to Hunt and Pierovich. Kaeding Performance awards for $50 were given to Gerhardt and Folsom’s Jerry Kobza.
