Terry Labonte Wins the Southern 500! (in 1980)

How many of you use twitter? I, like many old guys, didn’t think I’d have much use for it. I wasn’t even on facebook except for the NorCal Car Culture page. But it is, supposedly, a good way to promote your website, so I though I’d give it a try. Boy, was I wrong. It’s great! I am always finding interesting bits of news and information to write about. When the Kings were about to leave Sacramento, it was easy to keep up on the latest developments on twitter. A lot of times I would read it on twitter several hours or even days before it made the regular news. It is also a great way to keep up on favorite race car drivers and car events. Many race teams will “tweet” the progress of their cars during the race, which is great for the races that aren’t televised like most from Northern California tracks. The “tweets” go by fast so you can follow a lot of different people or organizations, most have links to articles or pictures.

Now, here is a perfect example of why I’m on Twitter. I have mentioned in the past that I am a big Terry Labonte fan. He is a 2-time Champion in NASCAR and one of the classiest guys in sports. He is older than me and doesn’t tweet much but I also follow his little brother Bobby who is a former champion and currently drives the No. 47 for former NBA star Brad Daugherty. Last week, he retweeted a tweet from Terry’s daughter Kristy that said: “This is a video of my dads first win. Gave me chill bumps while I watched. Enjoy”. It included a link to the following video on You Tube.

What a great video! It was interesting to see who Terry raced against back then, David Pearson, Benny Parsons, Dale Earnhardt and Neil Bonnett. All but David Pearson have passed away, and he was just inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Terry still races a few times a year against a whole new generation of drivers. Terry was the champion in 1984 and 1996 and this was his first win. I became a fan after the 1996 season and haven’t seen many races from early in his career. I really enjoyed this chance to see him race and listen to his post race interview from 31 years ago.

My conclusion is, that I need to keep a more open mind. I didn’t expect much from twitter and I’m still not much into texting or facebook, but there are a lot of great uses for modern technology and I should be smart enough to take advantage of them.

The 10th Annual Lewiston California Car Show

Like many of you, I didn’t know there was a Lewiston, California. But, if you go 26 miles miles west of Redding on Highway 299 and then north 4 miles on Trinity Dam Blvd, there it is. It’s not too far from Weaverville. I took Hwy 299 from Eureka to Redding once about 20 years ago in a truck, and after that, I decided to stay in the valley. It is one long and winding road.

For the last 19 years they have held an Old Lewiston Peddler’s Faire in the historic downtown area and for the last 10 years they added a car show. Most of the races and car shows last weekend in Northern California were postponed due to the weather conditions but not the dedicated car guys in Lewiston. They held their show and got a little wet but according to Jim Matthews from the Shasta Classics Car Club in Redding, they had a great time. He was even kind enough to share some pictures of the award winners with their cars.

Thunder in Depot Park from Rio Linda, California

The Thunderbolts Car Club's "Thunder in Depot Park" Car Show.
Thunder in Depot Park Car Show presented the Thunderbolts Car Club.

It has been several years since I last attended “Thunder in Depot Park” the annual car show presented by The Thunderbolts, (the Capitol Auto Club), the oldest Hot Rod Club in the U.S. I knew this because the T-Shirt I’ve been wearing says Thunder in Depot Park #2 and this was #9. So, in between rain storms here in Northern California, I drove out to Rio Linda. I was shocked by how many cars were there, this show has really grown. Depot Park is a long narrow grassy area that starts on M Street and probably goes back about half a mile and it was filled with cars.

For many years I worked in Rio Linda, either at Brasher’s Auto Auction or at my Auto Transport business. It was great to see some old friends again and eat a Tummy’s sandwich. I got to meet Wayne Cleveland from Citrus Heights, a member of the North Valley Rodders. He showed me his beautiful 1930 Ford, which he drives to most of the nearby shows. The colors were so bright and clear, an absolutely gorgeous street rod.

The following are a few of my favorites.

1969 AMC AMX owned by Reno & Cindy Clark of Sacramento. Winner of the NorCal Car Culture Best Muscle Car Award.
1939 Ford Cabover owned by Jim & Barbara Major of Newcastle. Winner of the NorCal Car Culture Best Truck Award.
1953 Studebaker owned by Jim Gardner of Fresno. Winner of the NorCal Car Culture Most Unique Hot Rod Award.
1932 Ford Roadster owned by Alan Taylor from Roseville, CA.
1949 Ford owned by Carter Gimlen, a member of the Thunderbolts.

There were several car clubs represented including: the Capitol City Cruisers, the Townsmen of Sacramento, Rods & Relics, the Cherrietters, the Slicks of Sacramento, the Hot Rods of Fresno, the North Valley Rodders and of course, the Thunderbolts. I apologize there were probably some others that I missed. The West Capitol Raceway Alumni Association was also there with a few examples of vintage race cars.

Our thanks to the Thunderbolts for again putting on such a great show and for somehow squeezing it in between the rain.
