PLACERVILLE, CA (6-25-11) – Defending track champion and current point leader Andy Forsberg of Auburn redeemed himself as Placerville Speedway’s ‘Mr. Excitement’ Saturday night as point racing returned to the El Dorado County Fairgrounds’ quarter-mile clay bullring following a two week break. Forsberg led every circuit of the 25-lap feature event during the ninth Fast and Furious Dirt Track Racing Championship event of the season.

After qualifying fifth and finishing third in his preliminary heat race, Forsberg earned the pole position in Saturday’s Hoosier Racing Tires feature race. With Placerville posse members James Sweeney, CJ Humphreys and Marc Mackay surrounding him in the first two rows and Chico’s Brett Miller joining Forsberg’s rival Sean “The Shark” Becker one row back, Forsberg was well aware he would need to power the F&F Racing #X1 sprint car out in front early and protect himself within lapped traffic as quickly as possible after the green flag waved.

Muscling ahead of Sweeney out of the first set of turns, Forsberg did exactly what he needed to and pulled into a moderate lead as Humphreys overtook Sweeney for the second position in the opening laps. Mackay’s front running position fell short early when he went upside down to draw a red flag and end his night with damage.

With four laps into the race, fifth place starter Miller worked his way around Humphreys for the bridesmaid position. Shortly thereafter, Becker worked his way up from sixth place in the fourth position and was setting his sights on Forsberg with Placerville’s Scott Russell close behind.

With 12 laps down, Becker overtook Humphreys for the third position and a battle ensued between Humphreys and Russell in his wake. While Forsberg fended off Miller and Becker in traffic, the local battle for fourth between Humphreys and the ‘Wreckin’ Ball’ heated up. It all came to an end on lap 14 when their hard side by side racing resulted with Humphreys colliding with the front stretch wall, ending the ‘Happy Camper’s’ night not so happily with front end damage.

Once the race resumed, Forsberg continued his dominate lead while Becker moved into second place with five laps to go. At the finish line Forsberg earned his first home track win of the season over Becker, Miller, Colby Wiesz who started 11th and Russell who rounded out the top five.

In the Limited Late Model division a new rivalry appears to be brewing between defending track champion Dan Brown Jr. of Grass Valley and Galt’s Les Friend. On this given night, both previous feature event winner started side by side on the front row and the brewing war between the two drivers gunning for the track title came out of the ditched and to the front lines.

Friend took the lead out of his second place starting position and was looking for his third feature win of the year. Brown closely pursued “The Hitman” from the opening lap. With six laps into the 15 lap event Friend drove hard into the turn while Brown drove even harder and fender to fender to fender contact ensued that resulted in Friend spinning out of the lead and Brown powering into it.

Once in front, Brown maintained his lead by running the lower, middle groove of the track where he held off the hard charging efforts of Thomas “on the gas” Arbogast of Auburn and Auburn’s Matt Davis who was racing hard in the third position until late in the race when Friend muscled his way back into the top three.

At the finish line Brown took the win followed by Arbogast, Friend, Davis and Jason Englund of Citrus Heights. As Brown took a victory lap and prepared to park his car on the front stretch for his trademark bow to the crowd, Friend turned his car around in turn two and came back around where he addressed Brown with a finger pointing that razed the local crowd who loves the rivalry of his division. Brown refrained from the routine bow in the wake of the event and both drivers returned to their respective pit areas.

In the Pure Stock division, Clarence Holbrook III of Galt posted his fourth win of the season. The green flag saw Dominic Stone of Folsom power out of the second position and overtake pole sitter Rick Grunert of Woodland for the early lead. Grunert would trail the leader for the first six laps of the race, at which time Holbrook moved into the bridesmaid position after starting third.

As the race reached its halfway point, Holbrook overtook the lead on the 10th lap over Stone. Once in front the current point leader and winningest driver of all three divisions never relinquished the top spot. Stone maintained the second position all the way to the finish line to earn his best career finish. Defending champ Chris Curtiss of Placerville drove from the 8th position to finish third while Grunert finished 4th ahead of Nevada City’s Burney McClure who started 12th and survived a mid race collision with his son and teammate Mike McClure to round our the top five.

J.R. Hildebrand Gets His Second Top Five Of The Year

J.R. Hildebrand from Sausalito, our only Northern California driver competing regularly in the IndyCar Series, showed us again that he has a great future ahead of him. Starting in the 4th spot, he spent the entire day in the top ten and made several outstanding passes on some of the series biggest stars. He is the leader in the Rookie of the Year standings and seems to be learning quickly how to compete in the IndyCar world. Here is the race summary from his Panther Racing team.

J.R. Hildebrand from Sausalito, California.

NEWTON, Iowa – (June 25, 2011) – National Guard Panther Racing driver JR Hildebrand put together the best drive of his young career Saturday night at Iowa Speedway, where the IZOD IndyCar Series rookie diced his way through the field for a fourth-place finish on the 7/8-mile oval. Hildebrand battled for a majority of the night with open-wheel’s biggest stars, including Ryan Briscoe, Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan and just missed out on a podium finish during the 250-lap thriller in front of a sold-out Iowa crowd.

“First time running up front rubbin’ with the big boys and a helluva run for the National Guard Panther Racing boys,” Hildebrand said after. “We’re really excited about how we did today. There are certainly still some things to learn from myself so I can earn those guys’ respect but we had a great car tonight. There were a couple of spots out there that got a bit dicey, but the car was great the entire race.”

With the finish, Hildebrand jumps back into the Top Ten in the IZOD IndyCar Series championship standings, where he is now in eighth position. He also extended his lead in the IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year standings, where he now leads second-place driver James Hinchcliffe by a total of 27 points. The result was Hildebrand’s second Top Five and third Top Ten finish of the season.

After starting in fourth position, Hildebrand lost one position to a charging Franchitti and remained in fifth position until the team’s first pit stop on Lap 26. JR slightly over-shot his marks and lost two spots exiting the pits but was able to make the positions back up on the racetrack, passing Danica Patrick and Briscoe to return to the Top Five by Lap 77. Another near-incident leaving the pits on the team’s next stop on Lap 95 – where Hildebrand got sideways after Marco Andretti pulled out on front of him with Briscoe on his outside – caused Hildebrand to return to the field in eighth position on a restart on Lap 107.

As the race progressed Hildebrand again passed Briscoe (Lap 108) and then Dixon (Lap 130) to once again reach the fifth position. As drivers cycled through green-flag pit stops Hildebrand reached the lead of the field on Lap 184 until a caution flag allowed the team to make its final pit stop under yellow at Lap 187. Hildebrand restarted in fifth position for an exciting last mad-dash to the finish.

“I felt if we could have started the last restart closer to the lead we could have finished up there, but this was a really cool experience for all of us at Panther tonight,” JR continued. “Hopefully we can turn this into something positive for the rest of the season.”

The most exciting moment of the race came when Hildebrand passed Briscoe again on Lap 227, going underneath the Team Penske driver and making slight contact with the lapped car of EJ Viso on the exit of Turn Four in the process.

“I had a run on (Ryan) Briscoe coming out of Turn Two so I got underneath him and I was trying to keep him high so that I could pin him behind the lap car, because I’d had that happen earlier to me by another driver,” JR explained. “He boxed me in there and I tried to slow it down there and I got a little wiggle and just got into Viso a little bit.”

Hildebrand had one more move left before the 250-lap race concluded, passing championship point leader Franchitti into Turn One on Lap 142 to secure the fourth place result for the National Guard Panther Racing team.

The IZOD IndyCar Series will take a weekend off before traveling to the Streets of Toronto for the Honda Toronto Indy, which will be broadcast live on VERSUS, Sunday, July 10th at 2:00 pm (ET) with additional coverage provided by the IMS Radio Network, XM channel 94 and Sirius channel 212.

A.J. Allmendinger Finishes 13th But It Could Have Been Worse

A.J. Allmendinger from Los Gatos, CA.
AJ Allmendinger, from Los Gatos, CA, the driver of the No. 43 Best Buy Ford Fusion came home to Northern California to race on Sunday at Infineon Raceway. It was a tough race with a lot of “beatin & bangin” so he was pleased to come out with a 13th place finish. Here is the report on the race from Richard Petty Motorsports.

• AJ Allmendinger started in the seventh position Sunday afternoon at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California
• Allmendinger finished the 110-lap race in the 13th position
• Unofficially, Allmendinger sits in 15th place in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver point standings

Race Summary: AJ Allmendinger lined up for the start of the season’s first road course event in the seventh place. As soon as the green flag waved for the start of the 224-mile race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., Allmendinger began his charge toward the front of the pack. By the time the field came
around to complete the first lap, Allmendinger had driven the Best Buy Ford Fusion into the top five.

Early radio communication between driver and crew was that the Richard Petty Motorsports Ford needed more rear grip. Crew Chief Mike Shiplett called for air pressure and wedge adjustments during the first pit stop of the day, which came on Lap 21 of the 110-lap race. Allmendinger remained in the top 10 throughout the first half of the event but lost some ground after getting tagged by the No. 2 car and spun around on Lap 65. The San Jose, Calif. native fell to 22nd in the following laps and drove to the attention of his crew for a scheduled pit stop at Lap 75. Shiplett called for another wedge adjustment to the car in an effort to assist his driver with the handling of the machine.

The No. 43 Best Buy Ford held down the 20th position when the yellow flag flew for an on-track incident involving the No. 14 car at Lap 88. During the ensuing extended caution period, Allmendinger relayed to Shiplett that the car was lacking side bite in the esses and rear grip. Shiplett called for the addition of a spring rubber in the right rear and four fresh tires during the Lap 89 pit stop. Allmendinger settled in for the restart in the 23rd spot.

Allmendinger began his charge to the front with 15 laps to go. One by one he picked off his competitors and with only 10 laps remaining in the race, had worked his way back into the top 15. Wheeling one of the fastest cars on the track in the closing laps, Allmendinger took the checkered flag in 13th place.

Allmendinger picked up two positions in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver point standings following the race in Sonoma. He now holds down 15th place heading to Daytona (Daytona Beach, Fla.) International Speedway next weekend.

Allmendinger’s Thoughts After the Race: “That was crazy just like always. The Best Buy Ford was pretty good, but from mid-race on we were kind of loose. Everybody was running into each other out there. I got into a couple guys and got them angry and then I had one guy dump me. I just tried to keep fighting. We are getting there. If we can get some luck on our side, we might actually be up front where we deserve to finish. It could have been a lot worse and 13th isn’t great, but it could have been a lot worse with 20 laps to go.”
