On Wednesday, The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Iowa announced its 13 inductees for 2011. Named in that group was Jimmy Boyd of Woodland, CA. who will be in Knoxville on June 4th to receive his award. You can read the entire press release here: http://www.sprintcarhof.com/Article/295. Jimmy won the Northern Auto Racing Club championship in 1979. He won 3 feature events, 7 heat races, 4 trophy dashes, and 2 fast times. On March 18, 1978 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite Texas he won his only World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series race. What made it more special is that it was the inaugural A-Feature event for the newly formed series and he raced an all-star field to win the $2,000 prize.
Boyd’s first race in a sprint car was in 1967 at Calistoga Speedway and his last race in 1984 at Baylands Raceway Park. Two sites with lots more information are West Capital Raceway Alumni and SCRAFAN.COM.
Congratulations Jimmy Boyd!
Awesome Gentleman, and he raced like that! The fist race I saw him in was Dixon (I was his neighbor in the Court and he kept egging me to come and finally did) it was an inverted start and he was last (since he had fast time) and he slowly passed everyone in the field including Swindell and Kinser and won the race. I was shocked at sprint car racing and shocked how someone I knew could win such a race. This was, I think, before he started racing Double X (XX) at West Capital… I was hooked on racing ever since sponsoring some limited modifieds, season tic at Bristol for NASCAR and racing sprint karts! What a great guy!
